This makes it harder to hold bottom with the same weight as someone fishing solid. Hollow lines flatten in the water and create more drag. Hollow core has situations where it works great, deep drop is NOT one of them. Other reels I have used and would recommend are the Shimano Ocea Jigger 5000P which will likely be my next purchase, Maxel (not sure the size), and Torsa 40.I have used a few 2 speed reels and for deep dropping I felt they all sucked, single speed all the way! The Saltiga 30T is a great reel as well but for deep drops is doesn't hold enough line. ![]() ![]() IMO a longer handle arm and t-bar handle are necessary as the stock handle sucks and doesn't give you any cranking power. This is not only because it allows you to fish deep drops more comfortably, but having more line on the spool allows you to move the fish off the bottom when you hook up because the spool isn't empty. It has a ton of capacity which is great for deeper drops. My Baja Special is also a great reel at a lower price point that has served me well. Drag and cranking power on the PE reels is phenomenal I have caught tiles to 51#, snowy groupers to 55# and it has not disappointed. Fish was only 25# but if it was a big boy like several others caught that drift I could have been in trouble. I have 500 yards of 65# Jerry Brown SOLID on mine and this week in 850' and some current I had the knot showing on the spool when I hooked up. I love my PE 7 but wish I went with the PE 8 for added capacity. I personally own and use a JM PE7, Penn Baja Special, and Saltiga 30T. In the last few years a lot of new reels have hit the market which make hand cranking much more enjoyable and even more recently more affordable. ![]() In the last 3 years I have spent over 100 days on the water targeting Tiles, Wreckfish, Snowy Grouper and other species in 300-1000' depths all using hand crank reels.
